Mulch Film

Mulch film is a thin sheet of plastic or biodegradable material placed over the soil around crops. It is mainly used in agriculture to protect the soil and create better growing conditions for plants.

Why is mulch film important?

• Conserves water: Reduces evaporation, helping soil retain moisture.

• Controls weeds: Blocks sunlight from reaching weeds.

• Regulates soil temperature: Helps keep the root zone warmer or cooler depending on the film and conditions.

• Reduces soil erosion: Protects soil from heavy rain and wind.

• Keeps crops cleaner: Reduces soil splashing onto fruits and vegetables.

• Can improve yields: Better moisture, temperature, and weed control can support healthier crop growth.

• Reduces some pest problems: Certain reflective or colored films can discourage particular insects.

Where is mulch film used?

It is commonly used in open-field farming, vegetable production, fruit production, nurseries, and greenhouses. Common crops include tomatoes, peppers, strawberries, melons, cucumbers, onions, and other vegetables.

What is it used for?

Farmers lay the film over prepared soil, usually before planting or transplanting. Crops are planted through holes made in the film. The film then acts as a protective barrier between the soil and the environment, helping manage moisture, weeds, temperature, and sometimes pests.

Common types include black, clear, white, reflective/silver, colored, and biodegradable mulch films.
