CAST NET
A cast net is a circular fishing net with small weights(sinkers) around its outer edge. When thrown by hand, it opens into a circle mid-air, sinks quickly to trap small fish or baitfish near the bottom, and closes into a pouch when pulled back in. Local options can be explored via Maimun Fishing & Tackles Ltd based in Karen, Nairobi.
Key Parts and Design
- Lead Line: Weighted perimeter rope that makes the net sink and close.
- Horn / Yoke: The central ring or collar at the top where lines connect.
- Braille Lines: Internal strings running from the lead line to the top rope to trap fish.
- Hand Loop: Wrist strap attached to the main retrieval line.
Common Sizes and Uses
- 8 ft to 10 ft: Standard sizes for catching baitfish in lakes, rivers, or shorelines.
- 12 ft: Heavy-duty professional size requiring advanced throwing technique.
Basic Throwing Steps
- Secure the hand loop to your wrist.
- Coil and hold the main line.
- Gather a portion of the net over your arm or shoulder.
- Bite or hold a section of the lead line to create an even split.
- Cast with a smooth sideways motion (like a Frisbee) so the weights fly outward to form a round circle on the water.
